“Sust Enable: The Metamentary”Sustainability Documentary Launches Kickstarter.com Fundraising Campaign to Raise $15,000 by October 22, 2010 (October 7, 2010)

On September 22nd at 6:00 PM, the small Pittsburgh, PA-based crew of Sust Enable: The Metamentary launched its first Kickstarter.com project, in an attempt to raise $15,000 in just 30 days.  Since its launch, it has received almost $1,500 in supporting funds and has been written about on Sustainablog.org# and the Sundance Channel blog.#

Kickstarter.com is an online platform for creative projects to receive donations from users all over the world.  It is all-or-nothing funding–projects must receive donations in the amount of their goal or higher by the end date, or else they get no money at all.  Sust Enable: The Metamentary Kickstarter project ends on Friday, October 22, 2010 at 11:59 PM EST.#

“We have a growing list of amazing interviewees, a committed crew, and a groundbreaking vision that could transform the average American’s understanding of sustainability.  It is time for us now to raise the money, support and awareness to make this ambitious project a reality.  Kickstarter.com is a great way to reach out to a broad community of people who are interested in our film’s subject matter, and we are hopeful that with a dedicated promotion campaign, we can raise our goal amount by October 22nd,” says Co-Producer Andrea Hall.

Sust Enable: The Metamentary (working title) is a feature-length experimental documentary exploring the controversial, complex questions that form our modern definition of “sustainability.”  The film unifies stylistic innovation, a personal journey, and provocative interview commentary, culled from a diverse range of innovative thinkers on the vanguard of defining sustainability, including Dr. Michael Ben-Eli (Sustainability Labs), activist Colin Beavan (No Impact Man), “ecovillage” activist Albert K. Bates, cybernetician Dr. Allenna Leonard (Viable Systems Model), plus many more.

In May 2008, Caroline Savery, a 21-year old environmental activist living in Pittsburgh, PA, USA, launched “Sust Enable,” a three-month attempt to craft a lifestyle within a “one-Earth-sized” ecological footprint in urban Pittsburgh, which would be depicted in a web-based video episode series at www.sust-enable.com.  Her express goal was “100% sustainability.”  Within just a few days of the project’s launch, Caroline realized that many things seemed to be going wrong. By the end of the three-month period, after battling poison ivy, heavy rains, weight loss, and severe depression, she was overwhelmed with doubts about the original idea for Sust Enable, and about what “100% sustainability” really means.  Nearly two years worth of reflection, writing, research and development has given way to Sust Enable: The Metamentary, with an anticipated April 2011 production launch and January 2012 release date.

The Metamentary seeks to be an independent, in-depth analysis into how real events may provide fascinating illustration to the nature of sustainability.  The result will be a comprehensive effort to make difficult ideas about sustainability more accessible to the American public through telling an artful, compelling non-fiction story.  “It will be a film rife with twists and challenges in both the narrative and the aesthetic experience, as–just like in defining sustainability–all facts and claims of objectivity are up for debate.  We will be addressing themes of reflexivity, holism, dialog/feedback, participation, and cycles, and more that we cannot expect” comments Director and Co-Producer Caroline Savery.

“This is not merely a philosophical or creative experiment–this is about changing the world through opening people’s awareness to the complexity involved in considering global sustainability,” adds Caroline.  “We believe strongly that the more people debate and try to define sustainability in terms of their own lives and communities, the more viable a sustainable planet becomes.  This is our hope and inspiration.”
